Vacancy: Part-Time Lecturer in Pinhole Photography
The Department of Fine Arts, Wits School of Arts, is seeking a dynamic and motivated individual to join our team as a part-time lecturer to deliver an exciting module on Pinhole Photography for the First Year BA Fine Arts Degree. This position offers an opportunity to inspire and guide first year students in their exploration of analogue pinhole photography as a powerful medium within contemporary art practice.
Course Details:
Module Title: FINA1003A, Fine Arts, Semester 3: Pinhole Photography
Duration: One quarter
Dates: 22 July – 05 September 2025 (with one week in November for examination.)
Total Contract Hours: 105 (Includes contact time, administration, and assessment)
Remuneration: Contingent on qualification and experience
Qualifications and Experience:
Education: A Master’s degree (MA) in a relevant field is required.
Teaching Experience: Applicants should have 1-3 years of teaching or professional experience (or a mix of the above).
Responsibilities:
- Teach and Engage: Introduce all the necessary elements for practical and conceptual processes and for developing a photographic narrative using pinhole photography.
- Weekly Lectures and consultations: 10 timetabled hours contact time per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays)
- Studio Processes, consultations, feedback, and guidance that includes sessions with the whole class, working in smaller groups, individual consultations, critique sessions, and hands on work in the darkroom.
- Facilitation of final presentations: consideration of final presentation for exhibition, artist handmade books and /or scanning for digital output (using print or video)
- Teaching Team: working with the Photography and Digital Studio Technician to deliver the course.
- Administration: Managing the Ulwazi (Canvas e-learning site), prepare briefing documents and course outlines (you will have access to past material), taking register, working with the first-year coordinator in identifying students at risk (where necessary), communicating with students in an appropriate and timeous manner.
- Assessments: Managing assessments and marking of work-in-progress and final work, to share these assessments, give feedback, and upload marks consistent with university processes.
Areas of Expertise
Candidates should be proficient in the following skills sets, tools and processes:
- Black and White Darkroom Photography
- Pinhole Photography including making of pinhole cameras and creating positive images in the darkroom
- Building Photographic Narratives
- Conceptual thinking: ability to discuss and give feedback on conceptual areas of photographic narratives appropriate for undergraduate level
- Ability to integrate practical, technical, and conceptual processes to enable wholistic outcomes
- Experience working with and ability to command a large group of 45-50 first year students
- Historical and Contemporary Context: Understanding the evolution of photography as a medium in contemporary art practice
