Wits University proudly marked its presence at the 43rd Southern African Transport Conference (SATC), held under the theme “Mobility Solutions to Southern African Challenges”. The event brought together professionals, academics, and students from across the region to explore forward-thinking approaches to transport and mobility in Southern Africa.

Representing the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, undergraduate student Chiemeka Iroka received special recognition for his outstanding contribution to the student essay competition. His essay, which was among the top submissions, proposed innovative and practical solutions to mobility challenges within the region. As part of his achievement, Chiemeka presented his paper during a dedicated session at the conference, showcasing the calibre of student research at Wits and contributing meaningfully to the broader discourse on transport solutions.

In addition to student representation, the school was also represented by Ms Lerato Mafulako, a lecturer in the department, who made two significant contributions to the conference programme. Her first presentation, titled “The Western Cape’s Use of AI Technologies to Enhance Asset Condition Assessment Strategies in Road Infrastructure,” explored how artificial intelligence is being applied to improve infrastructure monitoring and maintenance. Her second presentation, “Comprehensive Policy Recommendations for Improving Learner Mobility in South Africa,” offered forward-looking strategies to address persistent challenges in access to education through improved transport planning.

The participation of both student and staff members from Wits at SATC 2025 underscores the university’s commitment to advancing knowledge, innovation, and leadership in the field of transport engineering. Their contributions not only reflect academic excellence but also highlight the university’s role in shaping practical solutions for the region’s pressing mobility issues.
