Wits mourns the passing of Professor Jennifer Anne Glennie

- Wits University

Wits University is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jenny Glennie, a distinguished alumnus, honorary degree recipient and valued friend.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and all those who were touched by her remarkable life and work.

Earlier this year, Wits had the honour of conferring upon Jenny Glennie the degree of Doctor of Education in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the advancement of education and social justice. Her leadership and vision exemplified the core values of the University, and we remain immensely proud to have celebrated her achievements and lifelong commitment to learning during our May graduation ceremonies.

Jenny maintained a long and meaningful relationship with Wits for over 50 years. Throughout her life, she has shown remarkable visionary leadership and has served as a role model for educationalists everywhere. Her lifelong efforts have resulted in inclusive and equitable quality education, and lifelong opportunities for all.

A visionary leader in education, Jenny was instrumental in advancing open learning and distance education in South Africa. During the apartheid era, she played a critical role in developing educational resources for young people. As the founding Director of the South African Institute of Distance Education (SAIDE), she championed innovative and inclusive solutions, including the African Storybook initiative, which promotes home-language literacy for African children. Through this work, she helped shape national and continental approaches to equitable education. The impact of Jenny’s work is far-reaching and gave learners dignity, opportunity and hope, which will continue to guide and inspire others for years to come.

On behalf of the Wits community, we extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Jenny Glennie during this difficult time.

May her soul rest in peace.
